John’s Vision
John Blackstone knew the moment he saw Jamie that she was his mate. His vision has given him a glimpse of the woman who will fill his life with the love and acceptance that he craves. She appeared to him completely naked, beautiful, and pregnant, but the sadness in her eyes has always haunted him.
Jamie Montgomery’s life has been one of isolation. She has always taken care of everyone else and has learned the hard way that love will not be a part of her life. That horrible night so many years ago shattered her hopes for the future. A future with her would hold only emptiness.
John knows better. Jamie is perfect for him. She will bring fun and caring into his life. She will accept him, his mixed heritage, and his need to dominate without reservation. She will be the mother of his children and the keeper of his heart.

Chapter 1
She’s mine!
The words screamed in his head. There was no denying it. He would fight for her if he had to. The Great Spirit had destined her to be his.
John Blackstone watched as the young woman walked by his log home toward the stream as she had done every day for the past two weeks. His best friend and boss Deuce McKade was her cousin. She had come to her cousin’s ranch from back East and it was obvious to John that she was an integral part of the McKade brothers’ lives. Her name was Jamie. The very sweetness of the name suited her perfectly.
Cara. Beloved. His mother had often called his father by that endearment. He had heard the softness in her voice as she had spoken to his father, and he smiled at the memory of her thick Italian accent. He had never really grasped the full extent of what those words meant to her, but he understood it now.
The way he felt about Jamie was more than a physical attraction, and more than an appreciation of her kindness and gentleness. It was an expression of the rightness of their destined mating. She already meant everything to him. He desired her, but more than that, he ached to be with her and share her humor, her strength, and her love.
He didn’t understand why he had never met her before. From watching her and spending time with her in the presence of the McKade family, he knew that she was not like any woman he had ever known before.
He hadn’t seen her speak to anyone but her cousin Deuce or one of the McKade brothers or the women in their lives in the entire two weeks she had been there. Other than the initial introduction to her when she had shaken his hand and had smiled up at him, she had made no move to speak to him again and had pretty much avoided all contact with him.
She didn’t seek out his attention. Except for the time they spent together during the nightly meals with the family, she rarely spoke to him. He was not imagining it. She was actually avoiding him.
It intrigued him. It amused him. But her intentional distancing of herself from him did not deter him. His vision had given him all that he needed to know. She was his. As sure as he knew his own name, he knew that she was his mate.
Cara mia. The words whispered in his head. Yes. She was his beloved. She belonged to him. And she would soon know that they were fated to be together.
When he had been fourteen years old and his father had taken him into the mountains on his vision quest, he had seen her. Over the four days of his quest, he had seen her often in his mind’s eye. She had stood before him wearing nothing but a smile. Her voluptuous figure and her beautiful dark brown hair that hung to her waist, curling slightly against her flared hips, had sparked a desire deep inside of him. Her haunted eyes had called out to him. When he had reached for her in his vision, she had smiled and had taken his hand, bringing it to her slightly rounded belly to hold his hand against their baby that was gro
wing inside of her. He had known in that moment that she was his future mate, and the key to his happiness. But in his vision he had seen the tears that remained unshed in her soft brown eyes, betraying a deep sadness that he had never understood.
Did her tears mean that she was unhappy that she was carrying his child? The very thought brought a pain to his chest so sharp he nearly doubled over. Even the second vision he had of her sitting with him on the porch swing of his home, a baby nursing contentedly at her breast, and laughing at the two small children playing in the yard before them, couldn’t dispel the worry that plagued him. He worried that the vision was not a reality for his future, but a wish he had imposed upon himself to ease the loneliness of always feeling like an outcast in the town that had been his home since his birth.
The McKade family had welcomed his father and mother with open arms, and they had included him as a true part of their family, but the archaic prejudices of some of the townspeople had been tough on his sensitive nature. He had eventually earned their respect just as his father had, but there had always been the understanding that he didn’t truly belong because of his mixed heritage. His mother had taught him to stand tall and be proud of the man he was. His father had served as an example of the strength he needed to remain faithful to both his Native American and his Italian heritages.
His attention was drawn back to the young woman before him. Today was the day he would begin his quest for her. It had been long enough. His visions had been gifted to him twenty-two years ago, but he remembered every detail. He had re-lived the visions each and every night of his life as he waited for sleep to claim him.
His father’s people were Cheyenne. John had always viewed his father as a true Cheyenne warrior. He was bigger than life, strong of body and spirit, and he loved his wife and son with all of his heart and soul. He had told John often that the McKade land and the people who lived and worked there were blessed by the Great Spirit. John had seen the proof of this blessing in the mated couples who had been lucky enough to find each other over the years.
John had never been one to question his father, and he had looked forward to the time he would find and finally claim his mate. His life had been a lonely one. The McKade family had been a loving adoptive family, and the McKade brothers had been true brothers to him, but he longed for the time he would find his woman and make a life with her. He wanted the family they would have together. So he waited, saying nothing, watching for his mate, and doing his best to have the patience to wait for his destiny to be fulfilled as his father had taught him.
When he saw some of the young girls who had been born to the neighboring farms show amazing abilities that made others turn skeptical, John believed. Others might question the psychic connections these women showed, but he didn’t. He knew that each of their abilities was a gift from the Great Spirit.
He also took great comfort in the fact that each destined mating of the people of the area had been blessed with proof of that destiny. A marking of entwined golden links appeared on the back of each mate’s neck just below the hairline once the mating had been accepted by both mates. It was yet another gift from the Great Spirit that would bestow a blessing on each destined mating.
He had seen the marking on the necks of his parents, on Mr. and Mrs. McKade, and on Luke McKade and his wife Melanie. It was a mark that he prayed would be gifted to him and the woman who was outside his home right now. His Jamie.
He stood in the doorway of his elegant log home, his arms raised up to grip the archway. Leaning his six-foot-four-inch frame forward, the muscles of his arms bulged beneath his black T-shirt. He watched her silently as she arrived at the rushing stream. She stood beside it silently as she gazed down at the bubbling water. He concentrated on breathing deeply, trying to slow the racing of his heart. He wanted nothing more than to make his way over to her quickly, but he knew that he would just frighten her. His height and bulk had scared men twice her size.
Although not a virgin by any means, he had been selective over the years to share his company with women who knew that his time with them would be brief and with no commitments promised or attachments made. He had always been careful to be safe. He had known that he had a mate out there somewhere waiting for him, and he was going to make damn sure that he was ready for her when he finally found her.
This last year had been an especially lonely one for him. The brief hookups he had in the past had made him feel more empty than sated, and he had ultimately decided he couldn’t settle for empty sex anymore. Instead, he comforted himself with the visions of his woman that played in his mind, and he knew that no one could ever replace the need he had for his true mate.
As soon as Jamie had come to the ranch and he had recognized who she was to be to him, he had gone into town and had gotten himself tested. Just to be sure. He was not about to take any chances that he would jeopardize her health because of his past sexual activities. When he had received the results that had told him he was clean, he had said a prayer of thanks that he could safely begin a life with his mate.
He could barely contain the need he had to feel himself deep inside of his mate, with no condom between them. He wanted to feel every bit of warmth and wetness from her welcoming channel and empty himself deeply within her womb.
His eyes scanned the distance to the rushing stream where his mate had sat every day for the past week. She was always alone. Sometimes she read, sometimes she brought her laptop along with her, but she was always content to sit silently and watch the stream rush by. Once or twice she had removed her shoes and socks and had stepped into the cold water, carefully treading across the rushing current to the large boulder that sat in the middle of the stream to sit quietly for hours. As he watched her, he sensed a deep sadness in her. He longed to take her in his arms and hold her. If he could just touch her, talk to her, he knew he would be able to share her pain and finally understand it. He wanted to give her the support and caring he knew she needed. His heart ached at the thought of her hurting.
Instead, he watched her and waited. Each night he sat quietly beside his friend Deuce and his brothers at the large dining table in the McKade home as they ate. He was glad that her seat at the table was to his right, happy that he could be close to her throughout the meal. Each time he casually brushed her hand as he passed her food or drink, his heart beat faster knowing that it was his mate he was touching. Jamie was always polite to him, but she really opened up whenever she talked to or teased her cousins. The way she settled them with her calm and giving spirit amazed him. His heart began to fill with feelings for her, and those feelings were made stronger each night that they spent together. He couldn’t push away the deep need he already had for her.
Her quiet strength as she comforted Deuce made his chest ache with the need for that same natural caring that he wanted for himself. Her sense of humor as she teased Deuce and his brothers made him smile and know that she would prove to be a joy in his life. Her total understanding and genuine concern for her cousins tugged at his heart, and he selfishly wanted to grab her and keep those feelings only for himself.
Her humor, her honesty, and her intelligence all served to cocoon him in warmth whenever he thought of her. She was amazing, and he knew she would be the perfect mate for him. He could not have hoped for a more giving and loving woman to share his life with. Her strength of character impressed him, and he admitted she was truly beyond what he could have ever hoped to have as a mate. He knew she would be an integral part of his life. She was not like the inanely vapid women he was used to. She had a sense of purpose, a sense of duty, and a sense of presence that guaranteed that she would be a true partner to him in all things.
Her actions showed him that she knew the importance of being a part of a loving family. She had also not shied away from the hard work that came with running a ranch. He had seen her work tirelessly alongside Deuce, Spence, Rafe, Luke, and Jake in everything they did. And he saw the tenderness she had in her as she took care of her cous
ins despite all of their bluster and bravado.
His vision was not wrong. She was his. He was hers.
His body tensed in anticipation. His cock grew hard with desire and strained against the denim material of his pants, tightening to the point of pain at his need for release. He would claim her soon. Then both his heart and his body would finally be satisfied.
His vision of her flashed through his mind once again, making him groan involuntarily. He closed his eyes and swallowed with difficulty. He wanted to hold her sweet body against his. He wanted to cup her full breasts that he knew would fit perfectly in his large hands. He wanted to rub his thumbs across her rosy nipples and take one into his mouth and suckle it until she screamed with desire and pleasure. He wanted to slide his hand through the soft curls between her legs to find the warm wetness that waited only for him. The very thought of sliding into her depths caused his heart to race and his cock to throb.
He closed his eyes, took deep, even breaths, and made a conscious effort to slow his pulse. He was usually in complete control of his physical and emotional reactions, but he was not so much in charge at the moment. His heart was beating rapidly as his need for his mate grew.
He stepped back into his home and closed the door. Turning and walking with long strides toward his bedroom, he pulled the T-shirt from his body as he walked through the living room and threw it to the floor. He unbuckled his belt and tugged open the zipper of his jeans in one fluid movement, pushing his pants and boxer briefs to his thighs. Dropping down on his bed, he grabbed the bottle of lube he kept in the bedside table drawer, flipped open the cap, and squirted some into his palm. He reached for his weeping shaft, slicking it up quickly then tugged it from base to tip and back again.
He thought about how it would feel to push deep inside of his mate, pumping rhythmically. His hips rose with each downward thrust of his hand. He envisioned the heat that would surround his shaft and the wetness that would ease his passage into her sweet body—wetness that would show him that she desired him just as much as he desired her.
